India is showcasing the progress of its semiconductor industry as SEMICON India 2026 gets underway in New Delhi, bringing together global and Indian companies, policymakers, investors, researchers, start-ups and academic institutions.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the fifth edition of the three-day conference and exhibition at Yashobhoomi, New Delhi, on 17 September. The event is being held from 17–19 September under the theme ‘Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem’.
The event comes as India's semiconductor industry moves from policy development and project announcements towards greater manufacturing activity and commercial production.
India's semiconductor programme has progressed from establishing the policy and investment framework to developing manufacturing facilities across different parts of the country.
According to the government, 12 semiconductor projects have been approved across six states, with investment commitments exceeding ₹1.64 lakh crore. The projects cover silicon and compound semiconductor fabs, display fabrication and advanced packaging, with several facilities now moving into commercial production.
The development marks an important stage in India's semiconductor journey, with manufacturing infrastructure beginning to translate into operational capabilities and semiconductor output.
The government has also outlined an accelerated manufacturing roadmap, with additional semiconductor plants expected to become operational over the coming years.
SEMICON India 2026 is providing a platform for companies across the semiconductor and electronics supply chain to engage with Indian policymakers, manufacturers, technology companies, investors and potential partners.
The event features more than 600 participating companies, representatives from 52 countries, more than 400 executives and over 150 speakers. The exhibition also includes country pavilions representing Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Netherlands, Singapore and Sweden, alongside state-level participation.
The programme includes industry discussions, country roundtables, an innovation showcase, start-up activities, a student hackathon and a workforce development pavilion.
A central feature of this year's exhibition is the ‘Sand to Silicon to Systems’ Value Chain Experience, which presents the semiconductor journey across multiple stages of the industry.
The showcase covers semiconductor materials, manufacturing equipment, chip design, fabrication, advanced packaging, electronics and systems, providing a broader view of the infrastructure and capabilities required to develop a complete semiconductor ecosystem.
This wider value-chain approach reflects the growing emphasis on connecting semiconductor manufacturing with equipment suppliers, materials companies, design organisations, packaging providers and electronics manufacturers.
The event also provides a platform for international companies and governments to explore opportunities within India's expanding semiconductor market.
Six country pavilions and dedicated country roundtables are being used to facilitate discussions around investment, partnerships, technology collaboration and joint ventures.
The participation of international semiconductor companies and supply-chain organisations comes as countries and companies continue to assess opportunities to diversify and strengthen semiconductor manufacturing networks.
SEMICON India 2026 also places greater emphasis on the participation of emerging companies, students and the semiconductor workforce.
The event includes a Startup Pavilion, Innovation Showcase, Student Hackathon and Workforce Development Pavilion, creating platforms for start-ups, researchers and students to engage with the wider semiconductor industry.
These initiatives complement India's efforts to build capabilities not only in manufacturing but also in innovation, entrepreneurship and workforce development.
The scale and scope of SEMICON India 2026 reflect India's efforts to establish a stronger presence across the global semiconductor industry.
As manufacturing facilities progress and international companies, suppliers, start-ups, and research institutions participate more, India's semiconductor strategy is increasingly centred on building connections across the wider value chain.
The focus at SEMICON India 2026 therefore extends beyond individual fabrication and packaging projects to a broader ecosystem spanning manufacturing, design, materials, equipment, electronics and systems.
As the three-day event brings industry leaders and policymakers together in New Delhi, it provides a platform for companies to explore investment, technology, supply-chain and partnership opportunities linked to India's expanding semiconductor market.
