Mitsubishi Electric and Sony Semiconductor Form AI Vision Joint Venture for Smart Manufacturing

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corporation have signed a definitive agreement to establish a strategic partnership aimed at accelerating the automation and digital transformation of manufacturing operations through advanced AI-powered vision technologies.

As part of the collaboration, the two companies will create a new joint venture, Advanced Vision Solutions Co., Ltd., which is scheduled to begin operations in October 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and other customary clearances. The new company will focus on developing next-generation vision sensor solutions that combine high-performance imaging with edge AI to improve manufacturing efficiency, quality control, and equipment automation.

The joint venture will leverage Sony's industry-leading image sensor technology and edge AI capabilities alongside Mitsubishi Electric's decades of expertise in factory automation (FA) systems, industrial control, and manufacturing solutions. Together, the companies aim to deliver intelligent vision systems capable of analysing visual information directly on image sensors, enabling faster and more efficient decision-making at the edge without relying heavily on cloud processing.

The AI-enabled vision sensors are designed to capture and interpret conditions across manufacturing environments that have traditionally been difficult to monitor or quantify. This includes tracking equipment operating conditions, identifying subtle changes in production processes, monitoring product quality, and collecting maintenance-related information in real time. By converting visual data into actionable insights at the source, the technology can support rapid responses to production issues while reducing processing delays.

The companies said the solutions will not only improve visibility across production lines but also connect visual data directly to machine control and operational decision-making. This integration will enable manufacturing equipment to autonomously adjust to changing operating conditions, helping factories optimise productivity, improve product quality, and reduce downtime with minimal human intervention.

Beyond improving operational efficiency, the partnership is expected to support broader industry trends toward smart factories by enabling labour-saving operations and increasing the level of autonomous manufacturing.
