Lam Research is planning to invest more than $3 billion over the next five years to expand its global research and development (R&D) laboratory network, as the semiconductor industry faces growing pressure to accelerate innovation for artificial intelligence (AI) applications.
The semiconductor manufacturing equipment supplier said the multi-site expansion is expected to increase its experimental capacity by more than 50%. The investment will strengthen infrastructure across its R&D network and is intended to help shorten the time required to take new technologies from early-stage research through to deployment in semiconductor fabs.
Lam Research operates specialised laboratories across the United States, Asia and Europe, with facilities designed to support different stages of the semiconductor innovation process. The company said its laboratories collectively conduct more than one million experiments each year.
The expanded network will also support closer collaboration with semiconductor manufacturers. By positioning certain R&D facilities near customers, Lam aims to enable faster testing, qualification and validation of new technologies alongside customer engineering teams.
According to Lam Research, its R&D model brings together foundational research, process development and customer-focused technology centres. Research into areas such as new materials, chemistries and mechatronics can then be transferred into process-development environments, where technologies are refined for manufacturing.
The company said its integrated laboratory network allows equipment, data and expertise to be shared between locations and time zones. This approach is designed to ensure that developments made at one facility can be quickly applied across the wider R&D organisation.
The investment comes as AI-driven semiconductor demand is increasing the complexity of chip architectures and manufacturing processes. Next-generation devices are requiring new materials, more sophisticated structures and increasingly precise manufacturing capabilities.

The company believes that increasing the speed of its R&D activities will be an important competitive advantage as customers seek to bring new semiconductor technologies into production more quickly.
Lam Research's equipment portfolio includes technologies used for etch, deposition and advanced packaging, which are critical to the manufacture of modern semiconductor devices. The company expects continued advances in these areas to play an important role as chipmakers develop products designed to meet the power, performance and form-factor requirements of AI and other emerging applications.
Lam plans to begin expanding its global laboratory network in 2026, with the broader objective of increasing the pace of experimentation, technology development and customer collaboration.
The company said the additional investment will help it respond more rapidly to changing customer requirements while supporting the development and manufacturing scale-up of the next generation of semiconductor technologies.
