The new SAMARTH centre will train 10,000 semiconductor professionals over five years while advancing chip research, IC design, nano-fabrication, and industry collaboration to support India's semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.

Gujarat is set to establish the Silicon and Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Research and Training Hub (SAMARTH) at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar. The ₹190 crore initiative is being jointly supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the Gujarat Department of Science and Technology, and IIT Gandhinagar.

The centre is intended to advance India's semiconductor ambitions by providing state-of-the-art research infrastructure and industry-oriented training for engineering students, researchers, technicians and semiconductor professionals. IIT Gandhinagar has already begun procuring specialised equipment and appointing consultants to oversee the project's development.

Over the next five years, SAMARTH is expected to train around 10,000 individuals. This includes approximately 5,600 undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral students, 1,500 technicians, 1,000 participants in certificate programmes, 230 faculty members, and 230 industry professionals. More than 2,700 students are also expected to benefit from summer schools and short-term training programmes.

The hub will house advanced laboratories dedicated to nano-fabrication, CMOS process technology, semiconductor device characterisation, process and device modelling, and integrated circuit (IC) design and prototyping. These facilities are designed to provide hands-on experience and equip participants with skills aligned with the needs of the semiconductor industry.

In addition to training, the centre will encourage collaborative research with national and international institutions, focusing on the development of commercially viable semiconductor technologies and intellectual property. IIT Gandhinagar also plans to work with engineering colleges across Gujarat, enabling students from affiliated institutions to access specialised semiconductor training at an affordable cost. Certificate courses, awareness initiatives and summer schools will further promote interest in semiconductor careers among students.

The initiative comes as Gujarat continues to strengthen its position in India's semiconductor sector by attracting significant investments in chip fabrication, assembly and testing, reinforcing the state's role as a key hub for the country's growing semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem.
